UK data watchdog issues Snapchat enforcement notice over AI chatbot
Snapchat could face a fine of millions of pounds after the UK data watchdog issued it with a preliminary enforcement notice over the alleged failure to assess privacy risks its artificial intelligence chatbot may pose to users and particularly children. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said it had provisionally found that the social media app's owner failed to "adequately identify and assess the risks" to several million UK users of My AI, including among 13- to 17-year-olds. Snapchat has 21 million monthly active users in the UK and has proved to be particularly popular among younger demographics, with the market research company Insider Intelligence estimating that 48% of users are aged 24 or under. About 18% of UK users are aged 12 to 17. "The provisional findings of our investigation suggest a worrying failure by Snap [the parent of Snapchat] to adequately identify and assess the privacy risks to children and other users before launching My AI," said John Edwards, the information commissioner. The ICO said the findings of its investigation were provisional and that Snap has until 27 October to make representations before a final decision is made about taking action. "No conclusion should be drawn at this stage that there has, in fact, been any breach of data protection law or that an enforcement notice will ultimately be issued," the ICO said.

Silicon Valley's Oracles Are Reviving a False Prophecy
This article was co-published with Understanding AI, a newsletter that explores how A.I. works and how it's changing our world. In 2011, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen published an essay that became a kind of manifesto for Silicon Valley during the 2010s. "Software is eating the world," Andreessen declared. Computers and the internet had already revolutionized a bunch of information-oriented businesses: books, movies, music, photography, telecommunications, and so forth. Software also played a major supporting role in more tangible industries. New cars had dozens of computer chips in them, for example, and the oil and gas industry made heavy use of software to discover new drilling sites. But Andreessen, co-founder of the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, argued that the software revolution was only getting started.

Blueprints for recommender system architectures: 10th anniversary edition - AI, software, tech, and people, not in that order… by X
Ten years ago, we published a post in the Netflix tech blog explaining our three-tier architectural approach to building recommender systems (see below). A lot has happened in the last 10 years in the recommender systems space for sure. That’s why, when a few months back I designed a Recsys course for Sphere, I thought it would be a great opportunity to revisit the blueprint.

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we live, work, and interact with each other. We've all had to make adjustments to the way we do things, including the way we shop. We're now seeing a shift towards contactless and digital payments, which has made it easier for us to stay safe and healthy while still being able to purchase the items we need. Contactless payments have become increasingly popular during the pandemic and offer a range of benefits. Not only are they faster, more convenient, and more secure than traditional payment methods, but they also provide an extra layer of protection from the virus.

The Morning After: Everything Samsung revealed at its Unpacked event
Samsung's first big tech event of 2023 unveiled three phones and three laptops. The showstoppers are, predictably, the company's premium flagships, the Galaxy S series. The S23 Ultra ($1,199) has a huge 6.8-inch, an S-pen stylus and a 200-megapixel camera. It's the company's first Adaptive Pixel sensor, which means while you can still shoot at 200MP, by default, the system uses pixel-binning to deliver brighter, clearer pictures at 50MP or 12MP. Other upgrades include optical image stabilization that's been effectively doubled for better-lit photos and less shaky video.
Top 10 Companies Using Machine Learning Application
Machine learning and artificial intelligence are two of the most important technological advances in recent times. Machine learning is a field that promises to disrupt (to borrow a favorite term) our lives as we know them. However, many of its applications are still unexplored. See the example of machine learning in action! These are 10 companies using machine learning in exciting new ways. It's easier these days to list areas in scientific R&D that Google (or, rather, parent company Alphabet-) isn't working upon, than to try to summarize Google's technological ambitions.

Snap hints at future AR glasses powered by generative AI • TechCrunch
Social media company and Snapchat maker Snap has for years defined itself as a "camera company," despite its failures to turn its photo-and-video recording glasses known as Spectacles into a mass-market product and, more recently, its decision to kill off its camera-equipped drone. But that hasn't stopped the company from envisioning a future where AR glasses are a commonly used device, and one, as the company revealed on Tuesday's fourth-quarter earnings call, that will eventually be powered by AI technology. Investors wanted to get a sense of how Snap was thinking about the latest developments in AI -- particularly in buzzy areas like generative AI. which has benefited from advances in algorithms, language models and the increased processing power available to run the necessary calculations. One pointed to the AI image generator Midjourney's bot for Discord as an example of how AI could lead to increased user engagement within an app. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel agreed that, in the near term, there were a lot of opportunities to use generative AI to make Snap's camera more powerful.
